Ultrasound images, also called sonograms, use high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of specific parts within the body. Ultrasound examinations do not utilize radiation (x-rays).
Since ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and the movement of the internal organs of the body, as thus also the blood that flows for the blood vessels. Ultrasound images are not painful and help doctors diagnose and treat illnesses.
An abdominal ultrasound produces an image of the organs and other structures of the upper abdomen.
